Scholarship Support Turned Gabby’s Final Semester Into a Launch Pad
Gabby Panian hasn’t graduated yet, but she’s already doing the work. Right now, she’s in the middle of a 300-hour practicum with Sierra Community House, helping local families facing housing instability, nutrition insecurity, and mental health barriers. It’s required for her Bachelor of Social Work at Eastern Kentucky University, and it’s unpaid. Still, she had to cut back her paid work hours to fit it into her schedule.
A TTCF workforce scholarship gave her the room to focus. Gabby has her sights set on bringing what she’s learning back to Truckee, where it’s needed. Meet Gabby and the family who is helping her achieve her dreams in our recent article.
Local Donors Are Building the Workforce Our Community Depends On.
For many Tahoe Truckee residents, the road to a degree or trade certification runs straight into two barriers: steep tuition and a high cost of living. Since 2022, the TTCF Workforce Scholarship program has brought local donors and philanthropic partners together to ease those barriers and build the pipeline for the next generation of essential local professionals.
This year, TTCF and our partners awarded $258,500 to 12 young adults pursuing vocational and trade certifications, bachelor’s degrees, and advanced graduate degrees. TTCF fundholders, co-funders, and engaged donors pooled their resources, so each student’s award fit their goals.
Scholarship support has offset both educational expenses and the financial impact of dedicating this time to my professional training. It has allowed me to remain focused on successfully completing my education while gaining the practical experience necessary to become an effective social worker.
