Tahoe Truckee Prepares for the Impacts of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act
In July 2025, H.R. 1, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, became federal law. It changes how people qualify for and keep CalFresh food assistance and Medi-Cal health coverage, adding new work and volunteer requirements and more frequent paperwork. Expanded CalFresh work requirements took effect this June, and Medi-Cal’s begin in January 2027. For neighbors already choosing between groceries, healthcare, and rent, one missed form could mean losing support they count on.
Local nonprofits aren’t waiting. In their grant proposals and day-to-day work, they’re reshaping budgets and programs to help families, older adults, people with disabilities, and local workers keep the support they rely on. More than 45 health and human services agencies are coordinating their response through the Community Collaborative of Tahoe Truckee (CCTT), a program of Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation. Together with regional co-funders and donors, we’re making sure these nonprofits have what they need to stay focused on our neighbors.
Health systems, philanthropy, local government, and community organizations must work together to help eligible residents navigate requirements and maintain access to the safety net. This work takes time, resources, and sustained collaboration—but the cost of inaction is far greater. Investing in coordination now can help prevent coverage losses, support healthier families, and avoid more costly care down the road.
