From Planning to Action: How TTCF and CAL FIRE Are Reducing Wildfire Risk Across the Region
Protecting Tahoe-Truckee from wildfire isn’t a solo effort—it takes coordination across properties, communities, and landscapes. TTCF is celebrating the completion of our multi-year Truckee North Tahoe Forest Management Project (TNTFMP). Funding for this project was provided by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Wildfire Resilience Program, enabling TTCF to help property owners develop and implement forest management plans to reduce fuels in the region’s highest-risk areas.
This impact goes beyond fire prevention. Healthy forests filter water, support wildlife, and sustain the landscapes you love. The program also proved something just as important: when communities share knowledge, resources, and responsibility, the results reach further than any single organization could on its own. Impact Investing in Action: An Interview with Sache Cantu, TTCF COO
Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF)’s Forest Futures Strategy includes building a forest economy. Funding these projects requires more than grants. Sit down with Sache Cantu, TTCF’s Chief Operating Officer, to see how TTCF’s toolkit is built to meet these needs.
So What Is Impact Investing, Exactly?
It’s using money as a tool for good—and getting that money back so you can do it again. We can offer a loan with more flexible terms or accept a lower financial return, given the high community return. Especially in a rural region like ours, where access to capital can be tough, that flexibility can unlock projects that otherwise wouldn’t happen.
Impact Investing in Action: Alpenglow Timber
We had been in conversation with Alpenglow Timber’s owner, Dave Mercer, for over three years. Three. Years. This wasn’t a quick decision. We saw the bigger picture: local forest projects were getting stuck because there wasn’t enough processing capacity nearby. Meanwhile, a business was trying to expand to meet that need. So TTCF stepped in.

Stewardship is taking care of the land in a way that fosters a healthy ecosystem. When done thoughtfully, we can balance many types of land use while still improving the health of our forests, meadows, and streams.
