Second Homeowners Leave a Legacy with a $1.2 Million Gift to Truckee Donner Land Trust
Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) recently delivered a check for $1.2 million to our neighbors the Truckee Donner Land Trust (TDLT)—a lasting legacy from Jim and Virginia “Denny” Hoelter. This “surprise” gift was part of an estate gift, or planned gift, that TTCF had the pleasure of structuring in 2017. The sad fact that our donors had passed was accompanied by the knowledge that the legacy they left behind will do tremendous good in our region and beyond.
Their generosity stemmed from a 401(k) that they dedicated to charitable purposes. While the remaining estate had other instructions and intentions, the retirement fund was their way of giving back. Through thoughtful planning and TTCF’s guidance, their 401k was transformed into a lasting investment in the natural beauty they cherished.
Jim Hoelter was a fantastic member of our Board of Directors in the early 2000s, particularly instrumental in the protection of Royal Gorge and Lower Carpenter Valley. We are grateful to the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation for stewarding this gift, and for our long-running relationship supporting numerous projects throughout the years.

Make the Most of Your Charitable Gifts Before Next Year’s Tax Changes
With forthcoming changes to federal tax policy, this year presents a unique opportunity to maximize the tax advantages of your charitable giving. By making your gift before the new laws take effect, you may retain deductions and benefits that help you support the causes you care about most. Giving now ensures your generosity goes further—for both you and our community. Establishing and/or contributing to a donor-advised fund here at TTCF can help you make the most impact before year-end.
Significant federal tax policy changes taking effect in 2026 will limit charitable deductions for many donors but offer advantages to others. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), itemizing taxpayers will face a new 0.5% AGI floor for charitable deductions and a reduced deduction benefit for those in the highest tax bracket. These shifts mean donors may receive greater tax advantages for contributions made before December 31, 2025—an important window for those planning year-end gifts or multi-year commitments. However, for some, bundling gifts into a donor-advised fund will unlock bigger gifts while taking advantage of a multi-year approach. As always, we encourage you to consult your financial advisors to determine which approach best aligns your goals and reach out to us get help in accomplishing your philanthropic goals.
