Leaders Create Belonging in Tahoe-Truckee
Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation (TTCF) recently hosted a Community Belonging Series for our nonprofit and public agency partners. More than 100 staff and board members attended. The five-part series was designed to help leaders lean into the unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives of one another and our community members. Through practical exercises and case studies, participants received training that was shaped to our unique community. By working together, this will help leaders collaborate more effectively for the benefit of all of us.
Our five key takeaways:
- Community services are more effective when you meet people where they are. This includes delivering information in the distinct ways we all learn (often hands-on, through visuals, or listening); speaking and writing directly to your audience(s), aka language accessibility; and making it easy for people to attend meetings and find resources.
- Clear, detailed data helps us understand challenges and create solutions that work for everyone.
- Recognizing different experiences and perspectives makes organizations stronger, improving hiring, services, and community connections.
- Great hiring focuses on building teams with community ties and individuals with unique ways of thinking, while strong retention comes from mentorship, learning, and support.
- Successful action plans include quick wins, mid-term goals, long-term strategies, and the resources to make them happen.

Our contribution pays tribute to the efforts on behalf of the tournament and TTCF to continue what we hope to be a longstanding and rewarding partnership to support our community. We’re huge fans of the work being done by the entire team at TTCF and are honored to play a small role in their work.

Drinking Less Could Make Us All Healthier
For the past eight years, the Katz Amsterdam Foundation has been a core partner in advancing the efforts of Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation’s regional behavioral health strategy. In total, Katz has invested nearly $2 million in projects that support North Tahoe-Truckee’s mental health, substance use, and community engagement efforts. TTCF was recently awarded $300,000 to continue this work.
This funding will help launch a community-led campaign to de-center alcohol use in our community’s culture. More than 70% of North Tahoe residents “strongly” or “somewhat agree” that alcohol is important to most peoples’ social lives. The 2025 U.S Surgeon General’s Advisory highlights alcohol as a leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States. Alcohol Use Disorder, or AUD, and mental health conditions can often co-occur as well, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. TTCF sees an opportunity to shift the way our community relates to alcohol and improve overall health outcomes. By partnering with bars/restaurants, substance misuse treatment and recovery providers, sober-curious and sober-living community members, we hope to positively influence the way our community gathers and socializes.
