In the last several years, our community has embraced defensible space and forest management projects. In collaboration with funders, environmental nonprofits, and landowners, TTCF has helped impact over 142,000 acres since 2021 – greater than the surface area of Lake Tahoe. As our region decides what to do with the excess woody biomass removed from our properties and forests, TTCF is using regenerative capital to invest in innovative solutions that restore ecological landscapes and strengthen local economies.

This past year, TTCF has built a woody biomass portfolio that includes three community level solutions: the Northstar Biomass Facility to convert biomass to thermal heat, Sierra Institute’s Mosaic Timber Project to create cross-laminated timber (CLT) for housing solutions, and, most recently, Alpenglow Timber to process lumber, produce CLT, and create local jobs. This signature bundle of woody-biomass solutions aligns a blended capital approach to bring regenerative solutions in our forest for the protection and future of our community. Read more here.

What Matters to the Community Matters to Us

When TTCF began our Forest Futures journey, we were not experts in the field of forestry. Our smaller grant sizes were insignificant compared to the sweeping costs of environmental projects. However, as drought, bark beetle, and wildfires increasingly threatened our community and forests, TTCF explored our place in seeking solutions. What started as a salon series, in which we merely played the role of convener to educate ourselves and donors, evolved into years of research and discovery. In 2021, with the input of more than 40 scientists, forestry experts, consultants, environmentalists, investors, and nonprofit leaders, TTCF officially launched our Forest Futures Impact Strategy.

Since then, we have raised over $16 million and invested in over 50 projects. Throughout it all, we remain steadfast that what matters to the community matters to us. Our grants and impact investments undergo rigorous scrutiny, including lengthy due diligence, an entitlement process, community input, expert insight into TTCF’s multiple volunteer committees, and our Board’s recommendations. We are proud to be able to stand next to this body of work that has been built for and alongside our community.

TTCF is planning a year of curated experiences. Our Housing Lunch and Learns ramp up again in February and dive into challenges that shape and are shaped by the unique nature of our region. For Forest Futures, our upcoming Salon Series features storytelling from local leaders encouraging participants to think about what it means to protect our region’s natural resources and steward of our collective home.
